MARANON RIVER, PERU

The Maranon River in Peru is threatened by a series of massive hydropower dams. The Maranon is a beautiful river and one of the last free-flowing rivers in a country as well as the largest headwaters tributary to the Amazon River. In 2017, Gary Wockner traveled to Peru and did the inaugural river trip for the Maranon Watekeeper with a team of activists. Gary wrote this story, “Don’t Dam the Grand Canyon of Peru” for Waterkeeper Magazine.

Check out this video of Bruno Monteferri along the Maranon River here. Check out a video of our run through Lin Lin Rapid on the Maranon here. Check out this video of Magdalena Playa and Rapid here.

Save The World’s Rivers continues to stay in touch with advocates in Peru, including Waterkeeper co-founder Ben Webb, who are working to protect the Maranon. We are seeking ways to support advocates and protect the Maranon for the future.
