Wild Rivers Update: “Dams Kill Rivers” — Save The World’s Rivers in the media!

Hi Friends of Wild Rivers!

We are witnessing the most turbulent few weeks in American environmental history, and through it all, we are keeping our eye on the ball. Rivers in Colorado, across the U.S. West, and across the World may face new dangers — as well as opportunities for protection — given some of the actions by the Trump administration. Cuts in funding for federal and international agencies can ‘cut’ both ways because the U.S. government funds environmentally bad AND good activities in the U.S and abroad.

We are closely monitoring everything happening related to river protection, and dam threats, to oppose more dams and support protecting rivers.

Yesterday, E&E News broke the very first story about how the Trump administration’s policies may impact rivers, and our organization played the leading role in the story by arguing that DAMS KILL RIVERS, and that dams kill fish, and that “Hydropower is one of the most damaging forms of electricity production that has ever been created.”

Both myself, and former Reclamation Commissioner Daniel Beard who is on our board of directors, were highlighted in the E&ENews story which stated:

“Hydropower opponents are hoping the Trump administration is bad news for the industry.

Former Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Dan Beard has said he would approach DOGE to abolish the agency. Reclamation oversees water resource management including dams, and Beard is a board member of anti-hydropower group Save the World’s Rivers.

But during his first administration, in 2020, Trump refused to endorse breaching dams in the Pacific Northwest, an environmentalist-backed effort to help endangered salmon and steelhead populations.

Gary Wockner, founder of Save the World’s Rivers, said that while Trump has criticized wind power for killing birds, hydropower kills ‘exponentially’ more fish.

‘Dams kill rivers,’ Wockner said. ‘Hydropower is one of the most damaging forms of electricity production that has ever been created.’”

The E&E News story is paywalled, but the beginning of it is visible here.

Stay tuned and rest assured that we are keeping the voice of wild and free-flowing rivers in the news as the rapids increase.

Thank you for your support!
